The best foods to stay hydrated
Water is the main constituent of our organism. As a famous joke states: “The human body is composed of 70% water. We are practically watermelons with anxiety.” Don't worry, there are many ways to keep yourself well hydrated: let's find out together!
It's not true that we are composed of 70% water. The joke is nice, but the figures are different. Men are 60% water, while women are about 50%. These are approximate figures, but they underline the importance of proper hydration for our body.
Hydration is a fundamental part of the functioning of our body, and also of our diet. Our body produces a small amount of water through our metabolism, but it is not enough to keep us alive.
We must necessarily introduce a sufficient amount of liquids through the diet. To keep the volume of water in and out in balance, an area of the brain called the hypothalamic centre of thirst alerts us when we need to take liquids.
It is precisely thirst that is our alarm siren. But what does hydration do? Correct hydration maintains the volume of plasma and therefore of blood, regulates sweating, cardiac activity and the functioning of all internal organs. Water is essential to our lives, and we must ensure that we introduce it correctly into our daily routines. How do you do it?
The absolute best way to hydrate is of course to drink enough water. How much water should you drink? It depends on many factors, such as outdoor temperature, age and type of activity. Depending on your needs, you can drink 1 to 2 litres a day. A sports person could even drink 4 or 5 litres, but be careful not to drink too much!
Drinking too much water dilutes the electrolytes in the blood and can have dangerous consequences for our body. Our body can withstand up to a maximum of about 9 litres of water per day, but it is better not to exaggerate.
Food also contributes to proper hydration. Foods contain a percentage of water, or they can absorb a considerable amount of water. Here is a list of the best foods and superfoods for hydration:
At the top of the list are obviously fruit and vegetables rich in water. But what do the Chia seeds and oats have to do with it? Chia seeds absorb a huge amount of water, up to 8 times their volume. In this way, by eating them, you can have a real reserve of water!
Oats are able to absorb a considerable amount of water, and if they are consumed together with other liquids, they can help the body to maintain the correct percentage of body water.
We recommend that you start your day with a moisturising breakfast using our breakfast superfoods. Divine Oats and Buddha Awakenings, as well as Little Buddhas, contain raw whole grains, chia and flaxseed and other gluten-free superfoods and are great for your proper hydration!
